Determining Pole Locations and Mounting Height

The five form ten optical systems and the precise distribution patterns they provide offer the lighting designer almost unlimited flexibility in meeting the performance, location, and aesthetic requirements of a site.

A problem to avoid is getting equipment confused with basic criteria. Equipment should not be selected first. Basic criteria should consist of predetermined illumination criteria, mounting height limitations, lamp preference and aesthetic requirements. The selection of appropriate equipment cannot be made before the geometry of the area to be lighted and other layout considerations are evaluated.

As a rule the minimum mounting height should be no less than one-half the maximum projection distance from a single luminaire assembly.

Example: 50' from pole to perimeter = 25' minimum mounting height.
